Major U.S. Investment Firm turns to MAKE Technologies for Legacy Modernization Guidance

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) September 18, 2008 — One of the largest investment firms in the United States recently turned to MAKE Technologies for strategic advice on modernizing their old legacy systems. With the numerous financial industry mergers and acquisitions in recent years, integrating and modernizing old mission-critical computer systems has become a top priority for such firms.

Through the Strategic Modernization Roadmap (SMR) engagement, MAKE helped the client catalog their existing legacy system assets, review existing infrastructure plans, connect the objectives of business stakeholders with the information technology group, and chart a unified course to modernization.

Since most large organizations are already starting to deal with the legacy problem using multiple approaches, the client had a number of initiatives underway. MAKE’s role was to not only conduct a “deep dive” technical and business review of these application initiatives, but to also recommend alternative courses of action, as needed, resulting from conclusions drawn from the deep analysis.

One of the key findings related to timing. In the client’s baseline plan, modernization of the batch components at the heart of the legacy system had been deferred to the final phase of the project. However, as a result of the SMR, this aspect of the legacy system was identified as representing the greatest amount of risk to the entire modernization project due to its high complexity, dependencies and support of business requirements. A major recommendation of the study was to launch a proof-of-concept (POC) project immediately to create an on-demand version of the batch processes that would become a central component of the modernized application.

“On the content side,” says Grant DeCecco, Director of Product Management for MAKE, “the SMR details a range of modernization options for the client, not just legacy replacement. Certain applications are more suitable for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), rehosting, or simply retirement. Furthermore, the SMR can give the client a headstart on the Transformational Legacy Modernization (TLM) process if there are one or more applications suited to a legacy system replacement/rearchitecture strategy.”

“The MAKE SMR engagement is increasingly being used by organizations as an ‘informed catalyst’ that simultaneously discovers, analyzes, mediates and navigates the way forward for the client,” DeCecco continues. “It helps to break down internal barriers to communication and collaboration because our role is to act as a neutral third party, without internal agendas that can often stall and complicate progress on large projects such as a modernization.”

MAKE Releases Transformational Legacy Modernization (TLM) Version 4

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) September 18, 2008 — MAKE officially released Version 4 of the Transformational Legacy Modernization (TLM) technology platform today, capping 12 months of new development work and testing.

Using a Semantic Modernization approach that incorporates all three dimensions of a legacy system – business processes, application code and legacy data – TLM is being used in the public and private sector to replace aging, inefficient systems with well-architected, high-quality Java EE/SOA systems that conform to the demands of today’s web-enabled world.

TLM 4 includes more than 2,000 new features and enhancements in toolsets, methodology and support, re-engineering some core aspects of TLM, while also improving its overall quality and scalability. TLM delivers increased performance/scalability, lower risk, improved verification of the modernized application, training/embedding client resources in the modernization team and higher quality modernized code, to name just a few elements.

“This new version of TLM 4 is a real game changer, elevating all of our unique capabilities and adding even more,” says Mik Lernout, Director of Technology at MAKE. “We now have a Modernization Dashboard to provide a complete, 360-degree view of both the present case and future case analysis of the project, we have full visibility of the modernized future case business processes throughout their evolution in Phase 2, and we have searchable embedded video walkthroughs of every use case to provide easy reference to reality for the team.”

“These are the kinds of capabilities that distinguish TLM from any other approach on the market,” continues Lernout. “Not only do we build a 3 dimensional, holistic view of the legacy system, we include that present case in the same repository as the emerging future case design models so that at any point a developer or tester can trace back on a use case, a field, or a code block. Furthermore, because of the iterative nature of our Data Modernization Workbench, we grow the data models organically with the code base so developers are always working with an accurate database, critical to minimizing risk and delivering a quality outcome.”

“As an aside, “ says Lernout, “people will be able to see and try out our repository in action at Oracle’s OpenWorld in San Francisco next week. That would be a great opportunity to check out how it and the rest of the TLM platform works.”

MAKE’s booth will be located at: 3444 Moscone West – Intel’s Inside Innovation – Space INS 6. OpenWorld runs from September 21 through 25 at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.
