MAKE Technologies Announces a New System Assessment Project for the Georgia Secretary of State

Vancouver, BC, August 28, 2009 — MAKE Technologies, a leader in legacy application extraction, analysis and transformation, today announced that it has secured a new contract with the Georgia Secretary of State to deliver a Strategic Modernization Roadmap (SMR) project using TLM:CORE.

The State of Georgia was seeking a thorough review of their 13-year-old mission-critical Georgia Voter Registration System (GVRS) in order to plan for modernization of the system. GVRS tracks and manages 5.7 million registered voters in Georgia. The system is also the primary source for creating voter registration reports used for federal, state, and local reporting requirements.

“Our client was looking for a vendor with considerable experience in documenting legacy systems and performing requirements and systems analysis,” said Elliott Lipsey, Vice President, US Market, MAKE Technologies. “Applying the highly optimized SMR methodology and TLM:CORE toolkit, we will deliver recommendations to support this critical decision on their system.”

MAKE will apply their SMR methodology to deliver;

  • Web 2.0 interactive documentation of the current GVRS using TLM:CORE,
  • The documentation of business requirements for enhancements based on stakeholder focus groups,
  • An evaluation of COTS and transfer solutions for voter registration,
  • An evaluation of available graphical user interface (GUI) usability solutions, and
  • A cost benefit analysis comparing modernization strategies.

“MAKE’s experience with modernization planning and our fit-to-purpose methods and tools will save Georgia taxpayer dollars,” predicts Greg Ogburn, Methodologist for MAKE Technologies. “The State has set an aggressive timeframe for this effort, but TLM: CORE provides the repeatability to ensure that we meet it.”

Leading Insurance Company Leverages MAKE’s TLM:CORE for Both Modernization and Maintenance

Vancouver, BC, Canada, August 13, 2009 — MAKE Technologies, a leader in legacy application extraction, analysis and transformation, today announced that it has extended a Strategic Modernization Roadmap (SMR) contract with one of the industry leaders in North America to deliver a TLM:CORE extraction and analysis project.

Like so many other companies, the company has been struggling with the limitations of their legacy applications. Twenty years after the initial implementation of their key systems, they are now exploring options for system modernization to enable operational growth.

That is why the enterprise chose MAKE Technologies to build a Strategic Modernization Roadmap (SMR) in July 2009. MAKE’s unique SMR product uses legacy systems analysis to build a program plan for modernization based on empirical facts. Based on the effectiveness of this approach, the customer decided to leverage the discovery effort from SMR to jumpstart a TLM:CORE.

“One of the challenges our customer was facing was the need to maintain the old system while they modernize,” said Greg Ogburn, TLM Methodologist at MAKE. “In this project, TLM:CORE enables both maintenance and modernization. It reduces the risks and costs of legacy maintenance while providing the legacy documentation and metrics required to start modernization. TLM:CORE gives them information to take control of their modernization strategy.”

On the maintenance front, TLM:CORE immediately reduces Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by reducing the effort required to perform the business impact, code and data analysis required across maintenance tasks.

TLM:CORE maps any systems’ source code and data to business processes, and makes all information available to the maintenance team in a single visual browser-based tool. The team can analyze the system from business, code and data perspectives. TLM:CORE’s unique interactive visualization features enable the team to visualize the connections among these three perspectives. Analysts can instantly and confidently see the business impact of a technical change or determine the testing requirements of a maintenance ticket.

Dying on the Vine

Dear Sir;

I represent a software company that specializes in crop management systems for vineyards. We have been selling and supporting our solution in our geography for the last 20 years and have succeeded in capturing over 70% of the market. Our support revenues have allowed us to fund growth in new geographies, enhance our applications functionality and provide a solid return to our investors. Lately however, our competitors have been calling on our install base, flogging their current state solution, pointing out to our clients the limitations or our aged technology stack. What should I do?

Signed – Dying on the Vine

Dear DOTV;

Seems like you have a couple choices. You can squeeze the remaining support revenue out of your once leading edge application. You can sell you customer base to one of your competitors. Or, if you want to continue to enjoy the success you have had in the past you can modernize your application. The third option is really not that difficult to do, and with the proper business case, not the difficult to fund. It is however the most common reason for businesses, like yours, to go out of business.

Signed – MAKE

This scenario is being played out every day in the global application solutions marketplace. What was once a bleeding edge competitive tool becomes an expensive yoke around a users neck. New entrants with application functionality built on today’s available technology stacks are counting on traditional ISV’s to do nothing. ISV’s that want to stay in business must renovate their existing application to take advantage of the extendibility and price point of new technology platforms.
