MAKE Technologies Featured in MOVE Magazine

Vancouver, BC, Canada, September 25, 2009 – MAKE Technologies, a leader in legacy application extraction, analysis and transformation, was featured in MOVE Magazine’s annual conference issue by American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA).

In an issue circulated to AAMVA Members and subscribers, MOVE Magazine interviewed Christian Cotichini, founder of MAKE, and wrote an article “Focus on What Needs to be Done… And Do It Affordably during Difficult Economic Times.”

The article describes MAKE’s modernization approach and how it transformed the Nova Scotia Registry of Motor Vehicles.

In addition, the article introduces MAKE’s new flagship product, TLM:CORE a product that lowers TCO (total cost of ownership) by reducing maintenance effort. TLM:CORE maps any systems’ business processes, code programs, and data to help analysts visually navigate associations and dependencies among these 3 elements to save time and money.

Alberta Takes control of its Child Support Enforcement System with TLM:CORE

Vancouver, BC, Canada, September 21, 2009 — MAKE Technologies, a leader in legacy application extraction, analysis and transformation, successfully delivered a TLM:CORE extraction and analysis project to the Province of Alberta’s Ministry of Justice.

The project extracted and documented critical hidden information from the MIMS enterprise system. MIMS enables Alberta’s Maintenance Enforcement Program (MEP) to collect and distribute court-ordered child support and other maintenance payments. The MIMS application is a web-based, Java Enterprise application running on BEA WebLogic Server and an Oracle database.

Like many enterprises maintaining complex and critical systems, the Ministry of Justice was faced with losing their technical knowledge of the MIMS application. Within a few years of the initial implementation, staff turnover and lack of time left the Ministry with inadequate knowledge to plan effectively for application enhancement or to reuse components of the application in other planned projects.

MAKE was contracted in early 2009 to conduct a TLM:CORE.

The project had three objectives:

  • Conducting a strategic architecture review;
  • Providing a future roadmap for business and technical enhancement; and
  • Identifying code that could be reused in related applications.

In order to accomplish these objectives, MAKE utilized the CORE platform to perform a detailed review of the technical and data architectures and performed interviews with the Government of Alberta and CGI participants.

MAKE analyzed all aspects of MIMS using MAKE’s CORE Application Intelligence platform. The MAKE systems and data analysts loaded programs and database schemas into the CORE Repository. MAKE business analysts captured video of Ministry staff using MIMS with MAKE’s unique structured walkthrough method. The team then analyzed the videos to document the business processes of the application, and relate the business context of the system to the code.

“We used TLM for the core analysis and provided advice based on the facts from our analysis,” said Mik Lernout, Director of Technology at MAKE. “Taking advantage of TLM platform, we made both technical and business recommendations.”

MAKE helped Alberta Justice avert an impending legacy crisis. “A number of technical issues had accumulated over the last few years. Although each individually did not have a large impact, combined, they held down the flexibility and extensibility of the application,” said Ross Peters, Project Manager at MAKE. “Therefore, we made recommendations such as implementation of a new source control system integrated with continuous integration software, upgrades of the component architecture, and automated testing.”

The business recommendations involved improvements to security and interfaces with other systems. “Because we’d already had the analysis tool, we could focus on consultancy,” said Lernout. “In addition, MAKE’s considerable experience in Java allowed us to complete the project in a short period of time.”
